Clarification on expiry and shortcut deletion.

Hi all :)

We are running EV 9.0.3 against exchange 2003.

To help a user clean out his archive I have exported a folder from the archive and ticked "remove from archive" as a way of getting rid of several thousand archived emails.

How do I now get rid of the shortcuts? 

Do I need to set up item expiry? I am concerned about doing this as I don't want to EV to start deleting emails that we need to keep. I am a little unsure as to how this works in relation to removing orphaned shortcuts.
